Choosing a Background for your Photography Session

Background Options for Your Session

A key component of any photography session in the studio is choosing the background. The background should work with your clothing choices and obviously not clash with it.  A background can provide a nice setting in a complimentary color that does not detract from the subject of the photograph or it can be dramatic, i.e. bright white or black.  Of course backgrounds come in many different colors and some even have designs and may even have a specific setting, i.e. a scene that makes you appear to be in a garden or in front of a building, when you are actually in the studio.

I often find myself trying to describe my background options to my clients before their session so we can make sure I have the best color background set up for them before they arrive.  To facilitate this decision making, I wrote this blog and have included photos of my backgrounds as well as showing some in actual client photos, so you can see before hand what it will look like.  It is important to note that the colors of each background will change depending on how much light is hitting the background.  Thus, the same background can look different from one session to another.  And a white background can look different shades of gray depending on the amount of light hitting it.

And always, I will help guide you based on the colors and tones in your planned clothing choices as well as based on the type and style and use of your photographs.

Who knew there was so much to think about!?!
